Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) is a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of low-income pet owners who are living with AIDS in San Francisco. PAWS offers comprehensive services designed to enable their clients to keep their animal companions. Services include an animal food bank, subsidized veterinary care, dog walking, litter box maintenance, grooming, foster care and adoption when necessary. In addition to direct client services, PAWS plays a large role in educating the medical and veterinary communities about the benefits and risks of animal companionship for people with AIDS. PAWS also produces and internationally distributesSafe Pet Guidelines for immuno- compromised animal guardians. By helping them keep their much loved pets, PAWS hopes to improve the quality of life of those living with AIDS..
In 2000, PAWS developed a pilot program to expand services beyond the AIDS affected community to include low income people who face other chronic and life threatening illnesses .
Additionally, PAWS will be presenting a conference in San Francisco on October 20-21: The Animal Human Bond- Lessons Learned from the AIDS Epidemic.

Paws For Healing is a canine-assisted therapy group started in 1998 in Napa Valley by Karen Miller (and her dog Bailey) and Joanne Yates (and her dog Polly). Both of their dogs were canine-assisted therapy dogs certified in Bonnie Bergin's
Assistance Dog Program in Santa Rosa.
The goals are to provide the best training possible to people and their
canines who want to volunteer in local health care facilities. It now serves
Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties in various kinds of health care, like acute
rehabilitation and mental health. Paws for Healing volunteer teams are very
active, and dedicate thousands of hours to their communities where the need
of a canine's unconditional love is never ending.
